Roundtable discussion with Maria Cognetti

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend a roundtable discussion with Maria Cognetti, a family lawyer in Cumberland County. Maria has been practicing law for over 35 years and her practice is devoted exclusively to family law issues. She has been a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and the American College of Family Trial Lawyers, and has received the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Registry of Preeminent Lawyers. She is also the founder of Cognetti & Associates, which serves southeast Pennsylvania, including Cumberland County, Lancaster County, and Harrisburg.

As a family lawyer, Maria has had extensive experience working with both the legislature and courts in the commonwealth, and she is an expert on issues relating to divorce and custody. She testified before the House Judiciary Committee about the pitfalls of a presumption of shared custody, and she spoke about the burden of proof that must be met for a child to receive primary custody. She also talked about the benefits and disadvantages of the current shared custody legislation in Pennsylvania, and she offered her opinion on whether the proposed bill would be beneficial for children in the state.
